What is Plantar Fasciitis?

The plantar fascia, a vital band of tissue in your foot that runs across the bottom of each foot and connects the heel bone to the toes and supports the arch of the foot. Overstretching this tissue through daily activities like walking or running, can result in irritation, inflammation, and pain in the heel or arch.

Causes of Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis can cause pain in the bottom of your heel or in the lower part of your middle foot. There are several factors that can contribute to the development of plantar fasciitis, including:

  • Wearing a soft-soled footwear with poor arch support
  • Foot Structure – Flat feet, a high arch or even an atypical pattern of walking can affect the way weight is distributed and can put added stress
  • Excessive rolling inward of the foot or over-pronation
  • Standing, walking or running for long periods without proper support
  • Excess Body weight
  • Flat Feet
  • Tight calf muscles or Achilles tendons

Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis

  • Pain in the heel and/or arch
  • Acute pain with first steps in the morning
  • Increased pain when Walking barefoot or in shoes with little support
  • Subsided pain with walking after tissues warms up and becoming more pliable

Care for Plantar Fasciitis

  • Rest and reduced activity
  • Dynamic Stretching exercises for the plantar fascia, Achilles tendon, and calf muscles can help alleviate pain and promote healing
  • Ice therapy for 15-20 a day to reduce inflammation and pain
  • Consider Customized shoe insoles that provides good arch support and cushioning
  • Wear a Night splints to stretch the plantar fascia
  • Physical therapy
  • Wear comfortable and supportive shoes
